Matildas

Parramatta: A Dictionary of Place and Memory - M

A crowd of people sitting on bean bags and the steps in Parramatta Square, watching a large screen.

The sitting area in the eastern part of Parramatta Square is always going to bring back the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Every day of the tournament I’d sit there to watch whatever game was on. At any point of the day, people sat down with their lunch or a coffee to watch.

I will never forget the crowd that gathered for the Matildas’ semi-final against England. So much tension and yes, that night broke many hearts.

I recognised people from the Wanderers games. It was such a high moment, that World Cup, in the difficulties of 2023.

In the end, I was happy it was Spain that won, really any team other than England, France, or the USA.

I still have a Colombia scarf from one of the competitions the council put on at half-time.

 Who is the Colombia captain?

 Easy.

 Catalina Usme.

A football stadium filled with seated patrons waiting for the game a begin.
